Chapter 8: initiating collaboration in communities

Hello, For this unit in my Economics class we have read Doughnut Economics by Kate Raworth. We Discussed the different chapters and made posters on each chapter. We also created an interactive mini activity for each chapter of the book. We looked at how to improve the economy and we wanted to figure out how to make a more sustainable economy. We looked at important economists that had an impact on the economy. Taking all of this information we were given the task to write an additional chapter to Doughnut Economics. I wanted to create a chapter about collaboration in community's.

Chapter Introduction

Living in a world where we collaborate to reach a common goal, knowing how to communicate and share ideas and thoughts is way more ideal than trying to get things done separately which sometimes doesn’t work out. The eighth way to think like a 21st century economist is to implement solutions encouraging collaboration in communities. George Floyd’s death brought together communities and reignited the Black Lives Matter movement. It inspired a global reckoning with racism. Many came together to protest and bring more attention to the violence against people of color.

This was all happening during the peak of the global pandemic. Many communities were struggling during COVID-19 however, this brought many communities all over the world to work together to get through this troubling time. People cooked and gave each other food, shopped for older people, made masks, and checked up on older members and families with children in their communities. Although the circumstances were not great everybody leaned on each other to make it. Collaboration goes further than communities and neighborhoods. It also develops marketing materials and strategic relationships to attract and retain businesses and promote workforce development programs. Collaboration has become a 21st century trend seen in educational environments promoting group work and after school activities.  The need in society to think and work together on issues of critical concern has increased, shifting the emphasis from individual efforts to group work, from independence to community.

Discussion

Kate Raworth, in the book Donut Economics, said “homo sapiens, it turns out, is the most cooperative species on the planet, outperforming ants, hyenas, and even the naked mole-rat when it comes to living alongside those who are beyond our next of kin.” This relates to my chapter because I talk about how communities need to work together to reach a common goal and Kate is saying how humans know how to collectively unite better than anyone else. According to Rachakonda Prabhu “getting involved in your community is a positive way to bring about change in your area. Whether you are a part of a company or an individual, there are many benefits to immersing yourself in community events, volunteering and participating in surveys. Committing to make your community a better place by giving your time to skills and voice to your surroundings and making an impact.” That is saying that the idea of two heads work better than one, plays a role in this. Working together is going to get you farther than working on your own sometimes, You get to combine ideas and thoughts. You can split the work and get things done quicker and easier.

According to Gusto “54% of employees say a strong sense of community (great coworkers, celebrating milestones, a common mission) kept them at a company longer than was in their best interest”. Working or being in a space where there is community makes things way more enjoyable. Personally, being at a school where community is one of the big values and having a place where I know I will enjoy my time and will always have someone to talk to is very valuable to me.

Milton Friedman was an American economist who saw things differently than I do. Friedmans capitalistic ideas of the way labor works are not conducive to collaboration or togetherness in a community. Milton Friedman, who argued in 1970 that the only “social responsibility of business is to increase its profits.” I strongly disagree with this statement, I believe that only wanting to make money without trying to build those connections with other members of society is not ideal.

Overall, I did find part of this AP difficult, mainly timing was a bit stressful and trying to think of a new way to present an idea that is already out there. I did enjoy creating an image and finding statistics and information that could support my idea.
