The M&L hourglass
In my Light, Sound, and Time this unit we have been learning about time. We looked at different time telling devices, longitude and latitude, pendulums, sundials, and more. We learned about the cosmic calendar and what it meant along with the Big Bang! We learned how to use the Pythagorean theorem, how to find the period, arc length, and arc angle. We also learned about tools like an escapement, gnomon, sextant. Taking all of this information we were given the task of creating or adding to a time telling device. Below you can see a video of me explaining my device, how it works and why it is important. Hope you enjoy!
History
I got my inspiration from the original hourglass that first appeared in Europe in the eighth century. It may have been made by Luitprand, a monk at the cathedral in Chartres, France. It was widely used throughout western europe, an hourglass is a device used to measure the passage of time. There are two glass bulbs connected vertically by a narrow neck that allows a regulated flow of a substance (historically sand) from the upper bulb to the lower one. I liked the idea of the hourglass but I wanted to make it for a bigger audience.
Calculations
To the left is my math, I thought of my hourglass as a sphere. where the two half spheres created a whole sphere. I calculated the radius, volume, and surface area of my hourglass. for the radius I just divided my height by 2 which gave me 6. For the volume I used the formula 4/3x3.14xr3 and then plugged in my numbers to get a volume of 885.6in3. I then used the formula 4x3.14xr2 to get my surface area of my sphere which was 452.16in2.
EM, 2022
Overall, I enjoyed making this device. I don't think many products are made to be used by everyone, they are usually targeted at a specific audience and people that may need a special or specific type of design are not thought of. I think my device can be used for everyone even if you aren't hard of hearing or blind.
